Charlotte, the little animal lover, made cuddling sounds as she snuggled closer to the bird. Her tiny face lit up in a bright smile, and it was clear that she already vuwwed this bird with all her heart. "If I ever get 'dopted, I wish my daddy would be as nice as you, Master Saben Bird Sir," the child lisped as she petted him. "I never had a daddy, and Mommy died when I was born. She is an angel in heaven now." Lifting up her simple ragged doll with the knots for head, hands and feet, she beamed with joy. "Mommy made this for me before she died. It is the only thing I have to remember her by. Isn't it pretty? I call it Angel, after Mommy."
Baby Simon stopped crying as the bird shifted around on his branch and glanced at the bird with big, round eyes. His tiny face lit up in a giant smile, showing off the two little grains of rice in his lower mouth. As the bird made soft calls and acted silly, Simon's and Charlotte's laughter filled the air, and the two children clapped their hands in joy. Even little Paul had started laughing at this point. "Pwetty biwwwd," little Simon beamed as he clapped his chubby little hands.
Maurice, like Evan, also ignored Dreamy's call for attention at this time. The girl needed to realize that not everything in the world was about her. Instead he listened to the fair-haired archer as he inspected Wild and spoke to him. "It is true that me and the kids have been through many horrors," he replied and shifted as his damaged foot started to hurt again. "But our experiences brought us together, and if there's one thing we learned from Master, it's how we should not act towards other persons. We also try to be honest, helpful and work hard, to pay our way through life and not be a burden to others."
Dreamy, certain that she had won the fight with Charlotte, was just about to leave the sobbing 4 year old behind when something came out of nowhere, leaping right at her. She let out a scream of terror as she was flung against the bank. She felt pain in her face and felt something warm trickling down her skin. She touched it, and got scared when she saw it was blood - afraid the rifts in her skin would make scars that made her ugly.
Her eyes filled with terror as she saw a giant black cat glaring at her with fiery hate. Her brains did not make the connection to what had happened in Master's bedroom the night before, she didn't realize that this giant cat was Evan. Even so, she remembered how the animal had injured Master, and now she was afraid the same thing would happen to her. She trembled in fear when the giant cat promised her death if she continued hurting the orphans.
"P-please don't hurt me," she whimpered in fear, tears pouring down her face. "I'll do anything you ask, I promise - just d-dont kill me, please!"
Behind the panther, little Charlotte had stopped crying for a moment when the panther suddenly appeared. Tears were glittering on her little cheeks, and there was something hurt in her eyes after Dreamy's cruel words about nobody wanting to adopt a homely little girl like her. Her tiny chest was heaving after the crying, but she looked at the panther with big, round eyes. Her profound love for animals kicked in, and the beginning of a trembling smile could be seen on her face. "Pretty cat!" she whispered, taking in the sight of the panther with sparkling eyes.
Dreamy, facing the panther's wrath and sharp claws, did not agree. In the background Charlotte could hear Ardis calling out for Master Evan to stop and the child looked around to look for him. She couldn't see him anywhere, but she remembered that the giant cat had spoken with Master Evan's voice. With childlike wonder she looked at the panther, reaching out a little hand to touch his fur.
"Master Evan Sir," she whispered to the panther, like a child meeting Santa Clause for the very first time. "Is that you?"
