Between the little piano diddles and the scribbling on paper, you could hear the faint snoring of Pongo almost drowning out the ticks of the clock. It was an otherwise quiet spring day in London and Roger was making some progress on a song he’s been working on. He was sitting at his upright piano against one of the walls in his messy bachelor pad. Even if writing music didn’t occupy most of Roger’s time, he still wouldn’t concern himself with tidying up his place – he doesn’t have any one over. His life would’ve been depressing if it weren’t for his Dalmatian, Pongo. It could be said that Pongo was the one who rescued Roger from the pound. Having someone to take care of has forced Roger to take some break from his composing and take care of himself. Before Pongo, Roger would sometimes go days without eating or sleeping because he would be so captivated with work that he would simply lose track of time. It still happens on occasion, but that’s why Roger has set an alarm to ring at 5pm every afternoon to take Pongo out for a walk.
The alarm seemed to ring a lot earlier today, but Roger just accepted that he was having another productive day and lost all sense of time. Pongo was conditioned to associate the alarm with going out for a walk as he was barking excitedly with the leash in his mouth, jumping all over the place, wagging his tail so frantically you could barely see it. Pongo was a little more excited to walk than he normally was. He must really have to go! Roger attempted to calm him down so he could put on his coat and hat, tie the leash, and light his pipe but as soon as that leash made that signature click, Pongo yanked Roger out the door before Roger could take a puff.
These walks are about the only time Roger actually sees the sun. On the surface, it may seem like he’s annoyed with how Pongo is jerking him around however Roger is really thankful to be out of his stuffy home and stretching his legs out in the fresh air. Pongo led Roger to Regent’s Park, the neighborhood dog park and quite possibly Pongo’s favorite place in the world, judging by how excited he is to get there. Roger sticks to his routine of sitting by the lake under a tree where the change of scenery helps him have a different perspective on the song he’s writing.
