Gilraen listened to Glorfindel as he spoke of her mother, nodding in understanding when he talked about mother's loyalty to grandfather. "I never got to meet my grandfather," she said. "He died before I was born, and my mother never told me how he died or why. So when she and Ailsa first met at the party and it was revealed that Ailsa was King Ulric's daughter, I think it was quite a shock to my family.
I hope that time will heal all wounds, and that my mother will make peace with Ailsa, in spite of her feelings for King Ulric. I know it's a long shot, but I can't stop hoping... After all, Ailsa was not the one that murdered my grandfather, nor does she seem to have inherited King Ulric's cruelty."
She listened with concern when Glorfindel spoke of Arun trying to win her hand in marriage again. "You think so?" she asked in a worried tone. "He just won't take no for an answer, will he? But I don't love him, and I doubt he loves me. My heart belongs to you..."
She sighed when he told her to focus on the next man, throwing a glance at the guest list she had copied from her mother's writing desk as she helped mother sealing envelopes as the invitations for the party were sent out.
"Sir Malgalad," she sighed. "If he is from an insane family who dabbles in magic, how would you council me to talk to him? I don't wish to insult him and have him throw a curse at me, and yet this is a marriage I do not want... I doubt he wish it as well, for he has never paid any attention to me before..."
Noticing the sparkles in Glorfindel's eyes as she fanned herself, a smile was lit in Gilraen's eyes. Even if the situation was not ideal with all the suitors coming to disturb them all the time, it felt nice to spend a whole evening by his side. On top of that, it was her father's idea to have him as her guard.
As Malgalad sat down in the open chair, she offered him a polite smile, noticing that he did not appear thrilled to be here - just as little as she was to have him here. Perhaps there was a way to talk herself out of this situation without having to insult him after all... She was glad he did not seem to be in love with her. That way she did not have to hurt his feelings when she declined him.
"Good evening, Sir Malgalad," she greeted. "I hope you have enjoyed the dinner party so far."
She tilted her head when he spoke of a mysterious night, hiding her blushing cheeks behind the fan when he spoke of things not being as they seemed. Had he discovered what she and Glorfindel were planning? Or did he refer to something else? There was only one way to find out...
"It is a wonderful night," she said and nodded. "But I don't see anything mysterious about it... And yet I see on your serious face expression that you are not joking."
