Personal History
Evan Scofield is a typical teenager in a small town in the United States. His father David has been gone for ten years, leaving his son in the care of his mother. Because of this abandonment, Evan is ridiculed by the local bullies, making him very bitter and spiteful. Evan's only comfort is in the family of his friend Jamal, who have been helping Juliana raise her only son.
Evan's world changes when he meets Ardis, a strange girl from a world called Brunian. She has come to "the other world" to find help in fighting a war in her home. A wizard, called the Shadow, has take control of King Ulric and is using his mutant servants to hunt down the elves and Kamalli. When they first meet, Ardis is wounded from battle and Evan takes her to his home to be tended to by his school nurse mother. Traveling with Ardis is Blaz, an elven prince that uses his Kamalli abilities to blend in as a white stallion.
Following Ardis through the passage is a group of creatures called the Kumasi, servants of the Shadow. While Ardis comes to find Fenris, an old wizard and advisor to the Kamalli, the Kumasi enter Evan's home and kill his mother. Alone and facing the prospect of being charged for murder, Evan goes with Ardis and Blaz into Brunian. Together the companions travel across Brunian to the elven sanctuary of Isparia. While there, Evan is tested by the Queen and revealed to be the son of the Shadow and is ran out of the city.
Wanting ten years of revenge on his father, Evan travels to Taret, the capital city and confronts his father. Ardis, Blaz and others arrive later and a battle errupts. The Shadow is finally killed and his mutant army is transformed back into their human forms. In the aftermath of the war, Haidar Strongsword, Ardis's brother, becomes King and restores balance to the world.
Brief History of Brunian
The world of Brunian was formed at the same time as our world. The first residence were the elves, followed by the native animals. The elves became the stewards of the land itself, protecting and nurturing it whenever danger threatened it. Humans did not discover the realm until 1500 A.D. when wizards from our world formed a passage to flee the persecution of the European Middle Ages. The elves greeted the fledgling human clans as students, helping them to survive and build a kingdom of their own.
In the earliest reigns, the elves were a part of the royal council. The wisest teachers instructed the human race in elven crafts, teaching them to work with the land they inhabited. As time progressed, the different morals between the two races pushed the former allies apart. The human began to destroy the land, molding it to their will rather than working with nature as the elves taught. The elven royal family went to the king and implored him to stop this process, fearing the results would be irreversible in the generations beyond.
When their council fell on deaf ears, the elves retreated in to Arden Forest, free of the petty ways of humans. Where they were once one people, Brunian was transformed into two separate nations. As the years passed, the elves ventured forth less and less, soon not at all. At the present time, the elves and humans are the dominant non-animal races in Brunian.
The Kamalli
The Kamalli came to pass as peace keepers between humans and animals in the world of Brunian. The Founding Wizards did experiments on humans to find a way to make a half-breed, some one that could settle problems without violence. The first success was Thanos, the founder of the human city of Taret. After his marriage to the Elven princess Radella, the elves began making pendants to help the Kamalli control their transformations. In return, the Kamalli sent their children to stay with the elves for instruction and military assistance when wars broke out. Kamalli members were also taken into the King's army in return for protection from fearful humans.
Durning the Shadow's reign, the Kamalli were outsiders and slaughtered by the Shadow's men. Only until the Shadow's death and the return of Haidar Strongsword to the throne were the Kamalli again accepted in society. The segregation is slowly eroding but tension still exists in rural areas.
The Pendant
The Kamalli pendants are bestowed upon young children after they have been tested for the gift. The stone contains the blood of the owner, giving them command over their transformations. The color of the stone is also a symbol of their animal form. In the early stages, transformations are erratic and energy draining until the wearer learns to control themselves. The Kamalli use the stone in times of danger. If a Kamalli wishes, they can use the stone to take on their animal shape permanently.
Kamalli pendants are made of fine silver and the design is a circle with weaved vines throughout. The stone is molded into the center. The stone will glow when the wearer is ready to transform (not good in stealthy situations).
