Katara and Suki continued to laugh in their sleeves as Zuko patted Sokka's stiff back. Recovering from the shock of such a tirade, the Southern Tribe warrior glowered at the pair of giggling girls, hurt that his embarrassment was amusing them. Suki stopped instantly, giving her boyfriend an apologetic look filled with love. Katara had to stop herself from immaturely sticking her tongue out at her brother and went on quietly eating.
She could feel Zuko's hand around hers under the table. It was clear on his face that he was bursting to tell his family the good news but Katara gave his hand a squeeze. Not yet, she was telling him, but she was just as excited.
Wanting to get the awkward silence out of the room, Katara turned to Suki. "How are things with the Kyoshi warriors?" she asked. "Is the island prospering like you had hoped?"
"Better than we had hoped," grinned Suki. "It is so amazing Katara! It is as if the land is reborn again. You have to come visit sometime . . . at least when you get the opportunity," she added, glancing at Zuko.
Katara raised a questioning eyebrow, but the other woman ignored it. Glancing at her brother for a better attempt at conversation, Katara sighed. Sokka still hadn't moved from his rigid spot, frozen like an Snail Sloth.
"I don't think that Sokka is going to eat much tonight," she confessed to everyone. "So eat up, Zuora. You won fair and square."
Zuko chuckled at how immature his friends acted, most royals would have the dinner table be a place of peace, quiet, and maybe some talk of business. But not Zuko. Personally he loved seeing his friends and family goof off and make silly remarks. "Its okay sokka, I won't tease you for having your ass handed to you my a little girl" he chuckled.
Pouting lightly when he felt his hand get squeezed by Katara, and seeing the look she gave him, he sighed with a nod, Knowing he'd have to wait to tell the good news. As Zuko ate, he looked between his friends as they all spoke to one another. Zuko had always been the more quiet one of the group, only speaking when spoken to, enjoying other people's conversations.
He was happy to hear that Suki's home was having a wonderful time at being rebuilt, growing larger by the day. Though when suki cast a glance at him, zuko rose his eyebrow. "whats that look for?" he asked the lady warrior. "did I do something wrong?....did I spill something?" he asked as he looked around himself before touching his face to see if he dripped anything.
Zuora gave a gleeful cheer before digging in, mostly eating noodles and duck, sometimes even mixing the seaweed noodles with the meat.
Zuko's comment to Sokka sent the girls laughing again, louder than ever. Katara gave Zuora a proud wink across the table. Despite her love for her brother, she knew that he was too cocky for his own good and needed to be brought back to earth sometimes.
Noticing Zuko's look of disappointment, Katara leaned towards him. Brushing some hair behind his ear, she quickly whispered: "Soon, I promise," before sneaking a kiss. She didn't dare linger very long as Suki was sure to pick up on her behavior if she wasn't careful.
As Zuko questioned her, Suki just shrugged and began twirling some seaweed noodles around her chopsticks. "Oh, nothing," she commented offhand. "It just seems that Katara is spending an awful lot of time here in the Fire Nation and I was hoping you wouldn't mind letting the rest of the world borrow her for a while."
Katara frowned at the girl, not happy about being talked about like some book on lone from the Spirit Library.
Suki didn't take notice and continued on with more purpose. "I mean, after all, you two are just having a friendly visit, right? There is nothing going on between you two, is there?"
Katara glanced at her brother, sure that this topic would bring him back to life. Thankfully he was still quiet as a mouse, watching with glazed eyes as Zuora ate her meal across from him. Her attention moved on to Zuko, wondering how he wanted to handle the situation.
Hearing the girls laugh, Zuko patted Sokka on the back again, "I'll stop" he chuckled, looking at Zuora, "you should too, now eat everyone" he smiled before Katara reached out to him, knowing their actions towards one another may hint off that there was something going on between the two. Smiling, Zuko nodded, "Okay then..."
Looking at Suki, Zuko cleared his throat, "w-well...its not like I'm keeping her here against her will, she may leave if she wishes to" he muttered, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. At Suki's next comment, Zuko looked at Katara with a pleading look of 'help' in his eyes, unsure of what to say. Zuko was surprised to see Sokka stay so quiet, surly he'd want to pummel Zuko to the ground once he heard of the news thats to come. Most nations and tribes, big or small made it customary to be married before having any children, and well....Katara is pregnant, and they are only engaged. Though he was curious to see the reactions, yet nervous seeing as how he was sitting right next to Sokka, right in the line of a possible punch or two.
Katara was worried that Suki would ruin everything with her probing questions. When Zuko confirmed that Katara could leave when she wanted, the waterbender nodded her head sharply as if to settle the issue.
Zuko's fear of answering the question did nothing to help Katara's anxiety. She was bursting to blurt out their secret but that would have been disasterous. "Why, does it look like there is something going on?" she fired back innocently, twisting her chopsticks around in her seaweed noodles.
Suki raised her eyebrow. "You seem very defensive, Katara," she observed. "It was a simple question . . ."
Katara shrugged. "If we had something to say, you would be the first to know."
Glancing at Sokka, she frowned and kicked his shin from under the table. The boy let out a yelp and hopped up in his chair. Bouncing around, Sokka's eyes fell on Katara's left hand, which she had just placed on the table. Her fourth finger shown with the new ring that Zuko had given her.
"What is that?" he asked, more wonder in his voice than anger.
Katara glanced down, realizing her mistake. There was no backing out of it now. "Sokka," she replied softly. "There is something we need to talk about."
Katara seemed to be just as nervous as he was, which didn't help his own nerves at all. "so....how about another subject?" he spoke quickly. Though they really didn't seem to want to change the subject, still probing the same thing.
'shit' he thought to himself when sokka noticed the ring, then katara speaking soon after. "time to talk?" he asked, wondering if it was truly time to tell them of the love they found, the're engagement, and the baby, still worrying sokka may attack him at any given moment. sure he knew he could fight Sokka off, and win, but he really didnt wish to fight with his future brother in-law.
Katara silently praised Zuko's vain attempt to change the subject, but there was no escaping Suki's observations. The waterbender knew that Suki would be more understanding of their relationship than Sokka. When it came to the child however . . . Katara didn't know if either of them would greet that information with joy.
Knowing that Zuora was still in the room and that she would stand her ground with her father, the waterbender hoped to break the news once dinner was over and the adults could speak alone. This plan was immediately derailed when Sokka spotted the ring on her finger.
Sokka's anger level went from zero to twenty in a matter of seconds. "What have you got to say about this, Sparky?" he demanded of Zuko, staring to move towards the Fire Lord.
"Stop it, Sokka," growled Katara, stepping in his path. "I agreed to his proposal, so you should be mad at both of us."
"When did this happen?" demanded the warrior, perturbed that his way had been blocked, "What did he do to make you do this?"
Katara rolled her eyes and sighed loudly. "You are such a . . . such a BOY sometimes! Zuko didn't have to do anything to make me fall in love with him. We were both holding it in for a long time and now we have the chance to bring it out. I would have thought you would be happy for us."
Zuko was nervous as he sat there, then he began to wonder, 'if I'm this nervous about her brother finding out, how is it going to be when her father finds out?.....will I pass out or something?' Zuko had never felt so freaked out in his life, and really this was a difficult thing to grasp. All he could do was to sit straight, and keep a calm look on his face.
Looking over at Katara, then at Zuora, he took in a breath before letting it out slowly. He sat up straight and folded his hands atop the table. He looked much like the firelord he was born to be, sitting as if he we're in the middle of a meeting. "Zuora..." he spoke as he looked at her again.
"Yes father?" she spoke as she looked at her father with as much of a proper sitting position as he had.
Zuko looked at her empty plate before glancing at his daughter again, "may you excuse us please?" and with that, Zuora nods and heads out of the room, leaving Zuko and Katara to speak with Sokka and Suki alone.
Zuko was about to speak when Katara got to it first, "make her?..." he muttered as he shook his head. "I didn't make her do a thing...we spent some time together....I've always loved your sister and she began to return my feelings for her" Chuckling lightly as he stood, he stepped beside Katara, placing his arms around her shoulders, his golden gaze still locked on Sokka. "since you're accusing me of making her love me....tell me....tell me...is that the same fact with you and suki?" he asked as he glanced at her. "or are you just making excuses to be angry?" if one hadn't known before, anyone could see my now where Zuora had gotten that mouth of hers. Grinning lightly as he lifted his hand to run across the ribbon of the tribal necklace he had made for her around katara's neck, surprised no one had noticed sooner, he traced the circle of the pearl and each line without even looking as if he had the design memorized.
Katara let out a breath of relief as Zuora left the room. She caught the girl's eye, letting her know that she would speak with her once the fiasco with her brother was over.
The waterbender was glad when Zuko joined her side, holding her in his arms. Her legs felt weak and she was sure that she would have fallen without his support. She listened to her lover's words, glad that he had found his voice.
Sokka was dumbfounded when Zuko mentioned his relationship with Suki. "That's different!" he cried, his voice cracking a little. At any other time Katara would have teased him, but this wasn't the time for that. "Suki and I love each other more than anything. You two . . . you haven't know each other long enough to even think . . . She's my sister, I can't allow this . . ."
"Just because I am your sister, it doesn't mean that I can't fall in love," growled Katara. "Besides, you didn't have such a hissy fit when I was with Aang."
"That's because Aang wasn't FIRENATION!!!"
Suki gasped and leapt from the table as the sound of shattered glass filled the quiet room. The vase of water that had been left on the table had broken, leaving a freestanding block of ice in it's place. Katara was staring at her brother with her fists clenched. She had never been so mad in her life. The only time that came close was when she found Yan Ra, the soldier that had killed her mother.
"If that is the case . . ." she whispered, her voice as cold as the water she had frozen, "then it is a good thing that you will NEVER see my child . . . because it will also be Firenation!!"
Zuko sighed and shook his head, "no actually its not different...." he began as he brushed some stray strands of hair from his face. "need I remind you that I've known the both of you since the beginning of your travels? weather I was on your side or not...it still counts as knowing each other...." he sighed, "and you and suki....much shorter of a time....oh and what about that first girl...um yue was her name? you only knew her for a matter of days before she started considering choosing you over her betrothed..."
Really, sokka's attitude was getting on his nerves, making it hard for him to keep calm.....at least he wasn't nervous anymore...
At the sound of sokka's outburst, zuko stood there near frozen, his heart feeling as though it was being used as a pincushion for tiny little needles. "Sokka....you know as well as anyone....that under my rule...the firenation has changed" he spoke, trying his best to keep his breathing and anger under control.
Almost as suddenly as the glass shattered, the ice block in place of the vase melted due to being caught on fire, slowly being put out as it mixed with the water. Stepping in front of Katara, in the gap between her and her brother, Zuko placed his hands on her shoulders before cupping her cheeks trying to calm her before turning to face the water warrior. "you know....When I began aiding Aang, I really thought we could all become friends, or was your kindness a ruse? no not forget that I aided you in getting suki off that ship! It was I that risked my life to fight alongside all of you and against those that needed to go down....We're family now... weather you like it or not..."
Sokka had been backed into a corner and it was clear that he knew it. All he could do now was use his voice to make himself heard. When Zuko mentioned that he had "known" Katara even before he had joined Team Avatar, the warrior grinned widely. His argument was getting better!
"I am sure that all those times to tried to kill us helped you win my sister's heart, Zuko," he retorted. "Constantly keeping us on the run, attacking us with your firebending and oh, let's not forget the times you tied us up as captives!! If that's what you call dating in the Fire Nation, I'm not surprised your sister turned out so crazy . . ."
Katara was about to respond, but Zuko continued on with more zeal. She was glad that he had entered the conversation as her support, but she was also worried that he would take it too far in his passion. At the mention of Yue, Katara knew that Zuko had hit her brother's weak point.
Sokka's face turned bright red and his face turned into a scowl. In an instant, he yanked his sword from it's sheath. "Take that back, you pampered brat!!" he cried, starting forward with eyes filled with rage. "FireLord or not, I'll make you pay."
He hadn't gotten two steps before Suki jumped across the table and pulled him back, her soft voice slowly calming the water tribe warrior. Katara could see the mist of tears in her brother's eyes and touched Zuko's shoulder. Even if she was angry at her brother, she had to agree that Zuko had gone to far with his words.
Despite her attempt to reason with her brother, it was Sokka's turn to hit hard. Though her rage, Katara felt Zuko's touch, her ice blue eyes raising to meet his. She knew that he wanted to console her, but she could do nothing but be angry at her brother right now.
Sokka listened moodily as the two talked, first Zuko and then Katara. The warrior snarled as Zuko mentioned helping save Suki's life, not wanting to admit that the FireNation had done anything to help his family. Katara's comment stung the most . . . the mention of a child that he would not be permitted to see.
"Let's go Suki," he said crisply, pulling himself out of the woman's grasp and turning towards the door.
"Sokka . . ." pleaded the girl, her eyes turning to Katara in hopes of an apology.
"I SAID LET'S GO!!!" shouted the warrior, not even bothering to look back. "If Katara wants to throw her future away on a worthless prince, I won't be around to see it."
The sound of the door slamming ran through all of them. Suki looked at the young couple with fear in her eyes. "Katara, you have to talk to him!" she begged. "Don't let him do this . . . you and Hacota are the only family he has left!!"
The pain in Zuko's eyes was clearly apparent, "do not speak of my sister....I am not yet ready to hear of her or father....he poisoned her mind....filled her with hatred....I was simply confused on what my place was in the world..."
Now everyone knew firebenders had a temper like no other, and once the fuse was lit, it was only a matter of time before they we're to explode and go too far. Zuko realized it as soon as he had spoken, though it was too late now. "Pampered!?....Pampered!? you call being thrown out on the streets....used and abused physically! mentally! and emotionally by my own father and sister pampered!?" Looking at the sword being pointed at him, he glanced back at Sokka as guards from around the palace peeked out of hiding spots. Giving the signal to halt, he kept his eyes on the water warrior. "I can deal with this on my own..." he spoke to them, "guards...leave" he needn't his guards to attack his fiancee's dear bother. "then go on....make me pay...strike me....I guess I was too quick to assume you considered me a friend now after I aided Aang....do your worst."
Closing his eyes as Katara touched his shoulder he took a deep breath, slowly letting it out, the pained look residing. "I am sorry for my hurtful words...but you have reopened wounds in my heart equal to yours..."
Seeing the fear in Suki's eyes, Zuko approached her, placing hands on her shoulders before looking at Katara, "go on....go speak to him..." he muttered as he looked back at suki. "calm yourself....no need to panic....Katara has always been able to calm him" allowing his hands to slide away, sighing as he turned his back. "I really didn't mean to say those things...I'm surprised he didnt retaliate with anything that had to do with my mother..." he sighed, "I'm glad he didn't or...I fear I would have cracked...and not with anger..."
Katara listened to the madness around her, no longer sure who was winning. Though still angry at her brother, she had to admit that passions had risen beyond the original issue: her marriage to Zuko. She felt like burying her face in her hands and curling into a little ball, out of sight of the rest of the world. Glancing at Suki, she could see that the Kyoshi warrior was contemplating the same desire.
The waterbender became afraid when she caught glimpse of Zuko's guards watching from their posts. While she knew they were only doing their jobs, Katara was sure she would go against them if it meant protecting her brother and his special brand of idiocy.
The sight of the guards, however, made Sokka more angry. It made it clear to him that Zuko couldn't handle his own in a fight, that he would not be the right protector for his little sister. The knowledge that Katara was with child made Sokka even more bitter towards the Fire Lord, if that was possible.
Katara barely heard Suki's words as she pleaded with them, her blue eyes glued to the closed door. She had expected many things from her brother . . . but she never thought he would just leave. But he was gone, leaving behind a wound in his little sister's heart so deep. Her heart felt heavy and she didn't know if she could bear another conversation.
Her eyes glanced up at the sound of her name and she could see Zuko and Suki looking at her expectantly. "I can't believe he left," she whispered in shock. "This was suppose to be such great news, a chance to bring us together . . . but now . . ."
She clutched her hands together to stop them from shaking, the cold stone of Zuko's ring brushing against the underside of her right hand. Was her own happiness worth the heartache of others, the destruction of her family??
Suki hugged her tightly, the warmth of the woman's body making her feel safe. "He still loves you, Katara, no matter what he says. He is in shock, that's all. Please go talk to him --before Zuko's guards run him out of the country."
Hugging both of them, Katara left Zuko to finish dinner with Suki while she searched for her rampaging older brother.
[[Kadaj, do you mind rping Sokka for the next few posts??]]
Zuko could tell this was all putting strain on her body, and too much stress was never good for pregnant women, or the baby they carried. "this all needs to stop...or at least calm down...nothing is ever resolved with yelling..." Seeing Katara's fear when she noticed the guards, he placed his hand on her shoulder. "It's okay...I wont allow them to so anything" he began as he glanced at the guards, raising his voice loud enough for them to hear. "They seem to forget I'm not lazy like my father and care for things on my own" And with that, The guards backed off.
He could see the pain written clear across Katara's face, and it near killed him, causing Zuko to almost walk out to talk to Sokka himself. Though he knew he would not wish to talk to the firelord. Kneeling down to her, he pressed his forehead against Katara's, caressing her cheeks with his thumbs. "I know he seems angry but I'm sure he's just confused, or scared....most older brothers try to be strong and protective of little sisters....they usually try to scare away any man that tries to steal their sister...." he chuckled. "If Azula had turned out better I know I'd be protecting her..." he sighed. "This news was just too sudden for him..."
chuckling at Suki's words, he shook his head, "no need to worry about my guards" he muttered lightly with a sigh. Once Katara left, he looked at suki, feeling quite worried and unable to finish his meal. Instead he fidgeted, paced the room, twitching, anything that had to do with some sort of movement.
Sokka stood outside the large doors, feeling somewhat idiotic at his sudden outburst like always. Allowing his anger get the better of him, blowing up, hurting feelings. hell he was starting to seem no better then fire nation soldiers. Once the doors opened behind him, he expected to see the guards come out to throw him out of the fire nation, But instead, he saw Katara. "gonna personally escort me out?.....or are we going to talk more" he asked with a sarcastic tone, crossing his arms over his chest.
Katara couldn't hide a small smile when the guards slinked back to their corners. She knew that Zuko was more than capable of handling himself against dangerous in-laws, but it still made her feel good that the guards took their jobs so personally.
As Zuko's soft skin touched hers, the waterbender nearly burst out with tears. His words were kind, as always, and full of truth. Looking into his eyes, she saw love shinning back at her and kissed his cheek. Suki's words also filled her with more courage to face her brother.
She found him just outside the dinning hall. Clearly he didn't have a head for directions to escape the palace. His welcome was just what she expected but it still soured her sympathy towards the boy.
"You didn't see like you wanted to talk either," she pointed out lightly. "I know this isn't an easy thing to accept, Sokka, but you could have let me explain what happened. Will you let me now . . . "
Back in the dinning room, Suki could tell that Zuko had been completely unprepared for the disaster that had happened. She did her best to mop up the water-soaked table with her napkin, leaving Zuko to the silence he needed. When it was all too much to bear, she broke the quiet with a soft chuckle.
"Wow, Zuko," she smiled. "You have really changed from when you first attacked my village. Getting married and with another baby on the way . . . such a difference from the arrogant prince that we knew." She looked at him sternly as she walked towards him, the power of her training clear in her body language. "I just want to know one thing: do you really love Katara that much?? She's practically a sister to me, I will not see her get hurt!"
Zuko Smiled when Katara kissed his cheek, standing again once she finally gained the courage to go speak with her brother, hoping that everything would be resolved sooner rather then later.
Sokka sighed heavily as he listened to Katara talk, rubbing his temples in the process. "yea....go ahead...talk" his tone still had an irritable edge to it, but he slowly tried to calm himself now that he was out of that room, away from the heated atmosphere.
Zuko stared blankly at the door for a moment, just waiting for Sokka and Katara to return together, and happy, not parted and fuming with anger. Hearing movemen, Zuko looked over at suki as she began attempting to clean the watery mess. "here....no need for you to clean a mess you didn't make" he spoke as he began picking up the broken pieces of the vase.
Hearing the chuckle escape her, his yellow eyes glanced up in confusion. "is something funny?" he asked. "well...that arrogant prince had to grow up and see the truth hidden behind years of masks and lies..." he muttered in response. As she approached him, his eyes locked onto her stern gaze, was she too now going to pick a fight? he wondered as he stood his ground. She was merely warning him, questioning him of his love. "you need not worry suki..." he muttered as he turned his back to her. "I'd never harm her" he sighed, "you have my word that my love for her is honest and true..."
Outside, Katara glared at her brother for a moment, realizing he wasn't full ready to hear her side of the story. Knowing that this was as good as it was going to get, she stood next to him and leaned back against the wall. Her stomach ached a little and Katara soothed the baby, letting her child know that the excitement was over.
"I never planned for this to happen," she began softly, her eyes fixed on the floor by her feet. "When we visited Kyoski Island that first time, did you know that you were going to meet Suki and fall in love? Is anyone ever prepared for such a huge change in their lives?"
She took a breath, her body still adjusting to the needs of the baby. She was feeling very tired, but she pushed on.
"I never planned to fall in love and start a family, not now. But it has happened and I need your help to get through it. I'm scared Sokka, and I need my big brother to let me know that everything will be ok?"
Suki stopped mopping as Zuko helped pick out the broken glass. "I never pictured you having a motherly side, Zuko," she said. "I guess that's what Katara fell in love with."
Listening to his words, Suki got all she wanted to hear. Moving so that she could look at the FireLord again, she touched his shoulder. "I am relieved to hear that," she told him. "Aang really hurt Katara, though it was nothing he could avoid. He didn't realize that his life as the Avatar would keep him from settling down and raising the family that Katara dreamed of. Aang has accepted that hard fact, but Katara was devastated. I don't want to see it happen again, especially when you are both in so deep."
Sokka sighed when he noticed her glaring at him, "now dont give me that look sis..." he muttered quietly as he looked away. Fidgeting with the hilt of the sword at his hip, he shook his head. "no" sokka answered. "but...shes not..." he stopped himself, not wanting to upset his sister any further.
Though something seemed strange about her, like she was tired. 'maybe its the baby effecting her?' he wondered to himself, thinking it may become a fire bender like its father with how much it seemed to be zapping her energy. Sighing again, Sokka shook his head, "look....I'm sorry I snapped...you know how I am when it comes to new things being thrown at me so suddenly....everything will be okay sis...just let me get use to everything...alright?" he asked.
"people have always said I'm more like my mother" he spoke with a smile after he was done cleaning the mess up. "I Love katara with all my heart, and I'd give my life for her" he spoke as he stood to throw the broken glass shards into the trash. "My duties as firelord are a great task to juggle with love and a family, but its nothing I can't handle, nothing I haven't already done once...." he sighed. "Aang has written letters, asking is shes alright, I'm happy to tell him that shes fine" he chuckled, "both Katara and I have gone through great heartache, but one learns that if a person continues down a dark and broken road, that eventually it brightens up and leads them to true joy and happiness."
Katara knew from years of experience that her brother was a lot of talk, but he never meant to hurt others intentionally. She heard him mutter under his breath and she raised an eyebrow, not about to let him out of the mess he made.
"Suki is just like me, Sokka," she reminded him. "We are just like Toph and all the other girls that you have met in your life. We all deserve someone to love and it is never always clear who that person will be until the exact moment . . ."
Knowing her brother's apology was about as sappy as he was going to get, Katara scooted closer to him along the wall. "I was wrong to throw my child at you as punishment," she told him. "I want you to be there when it's born and watch them grow up. You're the best swordsman I know and I want my children to learn that from you."
Watching him for a moment, she looked over his older features and smiled. The strong build and beard were new, but her brother was the same as always. "Come back inside," she told him as she stood up from the wall. "I think we all need to relax before bed tonight."
Suki was glad that Aang was still looking after Katara, even after the breakup. The waterbender had been his inspiration when he was learning the elements, so it was only right that he would be concerned about her welfare. "Does he know?" she asked Zuko softly. "About the wedding or the baby?"
Soon after Katara and Sokka returned. Suki was glad that the siblings were speaking to each other and hugged them both tightly. Katara went to Zuko's side and kissed his cheek, glad to be back in his presence.
"I think we should retire for the night," she suggested. "I know that we've given our guests much to think about. I will check on Zuora while you show them to their rooms, dear," she told Zuko with a smile.
Sighing, Sokka shook his head, "but....you're my sister!....I promised dad I'd protect you at all costs...and....." looking down, Sokka let out a groan of frustration. Though hearing Katara speak again washed all that away. "really?" he asked with a shocked look as he continued to fiddle with his sword hilt. "thanks..." he spoke with a nod before fallowing her back inside, rubbing the back of his neck shamefully.
Auko looked at suki when she asked her question, "well....Katara said she wanted to tell everyone herself....we we're going to wait till a better moment before sokka noticed her ring" he answered with a sigh. "things got quite messy huh?"
When Katara and sokka returned, Zuko smiled when Katara kissed his cheek. Bringing his arms around her, he nuzzled her shoulder lightly. "alright dear" he smiled before taking Suko and sokka to a guest room.
Sitting in her room, Zuora was reading a book on the history of the nations. She had herd arguing and slamming doors from the dining room, but she knew her father didn't wish for her to get in the middle of it, knowing she'd probably burn whoever upset her father.
Katara felt her mothering streak creeping up again. "Sokka," she pointed out, "there is a difference between defending me and forcing me to live a lie. I won't hide my feelings from you because you don't like them. I have found love and a man that wants a family with me. Isn't that what dad would want??"
Sighing, she looked at her brother hard in the eyes. She had an inkling of another reason for his blow up . . .
"I'm not looking to replace you, you know?" she whispered. "You and Dad are my whole world. I just hope that you will let Zuko be part of it."
"Of course I do," she laughed at the shock on her brother's face. "Besides . . . I needed to say something to get you back on my side," she chided.
Suki couldn't deny that things had gone wrong with Sokka. "Well, if you are honest with everyone and let them get their emotions out, you should be fine. I'll have my girls there for backup, just in case," she added with a smile.
Glad that see that her guests had calmed down, Katara made her way to Zuora's room. Outside the door, she pause for breath. Her hand automatically went to her stomach, remembering that this child would soon be Zuora's first sibling and that she would be the mother of TWO rambunctious children. Well, it was nothing new to her having grown up around Sokka and his shenanigans . . .
Raising her hand, she rapped the door with her knuckles before peaking around the corner.
"Can I come in?" she asked softly, hoping to find the FireNation princess in a better mood than the rest of her dinner companions.
[uhhh i dunno, maybe further along the pregnancy?]
"Sounds like something any loving parent would want if I do say so myself" Zuko chimed in with a smug smile on his face.
Sokka couldn't help but still have a bit of anger, specially with Zuko looking so smug. But it was true, Katara would never replace him, nor anyone in their village. And they were all friends....right? "I know" he sighed. "just....you're my sister...and" he cut himself off, feeling distraught for a moment, Lost, confused... ~
Sitting in her room, Zuora waited for anyone to come tell her if things we're okay or not. She really didnt like it when people said mean or rude comments about her father. She had herd the stories of his past and how rude he use to be, but he's changed now, he's a different, much better person now, and people seemed to love him for it now, but there we're still people out there that would upset him.
Hearing Katara at the door, Zuora perked up happily with a smile, "sure~!" she chimed in, "you dont need to ask"
Katara was glad that the conversation was now back at a normal level. She smiled at her brother when he tried to explain himself, his words falling into a string of silence.
"And I will always be your little sister," she reminded him gently. "Marrying Zuko will never change that. Besides, it will still be a long time before we have to call you Uncle Sokka!"
Getting permission from Zuora to come in, the waterbender joined her on the bed and peaked over at the book she was reading. She knew that the girl had mixed feelings about being sent away from the conversation and she did her best to smile, showing everything was ok.
"I'm sorry about my brother," she explained. "He just got so much shocking news all at once. I think he will feel better tomorrow and you can see him again. He is really a very fun guy, you will like him."
Sokka was happy to know he'd always have his sweet little sister, though the news did come to a shock to him, he was just happy now that she was happy. Fighting for someone you love is a brave and wonderful thing. When she spoke again, Sokka chuckled. "Oh wont that be wonderful" he rolled his eyes sarcasticly. " though as much as I love visiting you sister, Suki and I should leave" he sighed. "sorry I messed up dinner " he appologized before looking at zuko. "you take care of her or I'll get you..." he spoke, watching the firebender nod at him. ~
Giggling when Katara came in, Zuora smiled. "Everything better now?" she asked when she saw katara smiling as well. Closing her book, The front page read 'The Fire nation, History through the ages' "papa made printing companies fix everything in the history books" she smiled. "There use to be alot of lies in the books" She spoke, explaining the book. "Its okay, I'm sure your big brother was trying to just protect you" she knew that if things with Azula had been different, that Zuko as well would be protective of his sister.
Relieved that Sokka was finally at terms with her decisions, Katara followed him back to the dining area. She was glad that they were a family again and that her family was growing beyond what she had expected at this point in her life. But she was disappointed that her brother had to leave so soon.
"Can't you stay for the night?" she pleaded. "We only got to see you again after so long. Suki, reason with him please."
But despite the friendship of the two girls, the Kyoshi warrior only shook her head. "He's right," she agreed. "We will come back as soon as we can. Perhaps we will bring a surprise with us," she hinted with a smile, giving Katara a loving hug.
Disappointed, but understanding, Katara said farewell to her family and went to check on Zuora. She found the young princess reading about the history of her people. "You are lucky that your father is so wonderful," she told the girl, laying down on the comfortable pillows. "I don't know how much he has told you about the war, but you are very lucky to have been born in this new age of peace. The Fire Nation was blessed to have your father leading it."
"Sokka's version of protection is to yell about something until he's out of breath," she joked. "As you can see, he likes to talk A LOT. I hope you will be just as protective with your little brother or sister," she added, caressing her stomach in that maternal way that she knew by instinct.
"So what does the new book say?" she asked, leaning towards the book and examining the cover.
Chuckling when Katara begged him to stay, he looked over at suki waiting for an answer. Once she did, Sokka nodded as well. "right, right....how about sometime soon, me an suki come back to stay for a bit? that way we can spend more time together and not have to worry about us having to leave so soon, Working with dad now you know?" he smiled.
Giggling, Zuora smiled, "I'm sure you have a great dad too" she smiled, "But dad told me a whole lot about the war" she smiled, "and hes a great leader huh? I hope someday im as great as him" Watching Katara rub her belly, Zuora nodded. "Of course!" she smiled, "I'll be a great big sister!" she smiled as she looked down at the book. "Papa says he made sure the details were exactly the way things really were in the war, and how things really we're back in the past, who the real good guys were and who was bad" she smiled happily. "So how are you gonna tell the rest of your family about the baby?" she asked curiously, "are you nervous?"
Katara was enjoying her time with the young princess. When the child asked about her father, the waterbender smiled. "He is wonderful, your soon-to-be grandfather. He is the chief of the Southern Watertribe. He was away at war during most of my childhood and I was very angry for a long time. Growing up without a mother, it was hard to forgive him when he came home. Even if I knew it was for the best, it was hard growing up without parents."
Katara could see the delight in the child's eyes when she spoke of the work Zuko had done to correct the history of the Fire Nation. When the conversation switched to the child she was carrying, the waterbender sighed contently. "I would love to tell them all in person," she explained. "I wish they could all come visit us here, to meet you and see the changes your father has made to the country. But they are all over the world. My father is in the South Pole and I don't know where Aang is at the moment. I suppose a letter will have to do until they have time to visit themselves."
Zuora giggled happily, "I can't Wait to meet him~" she smiled happily, "he sounds like a brave man" she spoke, feeling a bit of sadness for Katara being without her mother, and the majority of her father. "the southern water tribe is small correct? For someone to protect a tribe so small, that takes a great amount of bravery and strength" she smiled. "I too hope you are able to gather everyone~ the fire nation Throws great parties! and this is something to really celebrate!" ~ A knock sounded on the door before it cracked open, "hello ladies" Zuko smiled as he poked his head in the room, "talking about anything interesting?" he asked curiously as he opened the door the rest of the way.
Katara thought back on her childhood in the Southern Water Tribe. "There was only a dozen of us left when I met Aang. The men of our tribe had left for the war and it was only my brother and the young boys to protect the village. I don't know how many we have now, but my father says that the tribe is growing every year. Families are growing too and there is hope that there will be more Waterbenders in the future."
She caressed her stomach as she spoke, wondering if the child would take after her or Zuko. She had a feeling it was Fire Nation since her skin felt a little warm as she slept every night.
Just then, Zuko came in and the girls smiled. Katara ran a hand over the top of the child's head. "We were just making plans for the celebration dinner. I hope that our family will respond soon. Zuora is dying to meet everyone!"
She gave the little girl a wink before sliding off the bed. Her head felt a little dizzy and her legs felt heavy. The care of the baby was starting to wear on her. Walking over to Zuko, she touched his face with a soft hand. Looking into his eyes, she smiled, her gaze betraying the unending love that she felt for him. Her heart fluttered in her chest as she moved her hand to his shoulder, knowing that his strength and devotion would be hers for the rest of their lives.
"I will see you in the bedroom," she told him softly before slipping out the door. "Don't be long, my sweet."
Listening to the waterbender, Zuora smiled happily. Equality and peace was something she'd always hoped and wished for, and she knew that the unity her father and Katara we're creating was truly something special. Seeing her father enter, she bounced a bit. "yea~"
Chuckling, zuko walked over to them, taking quick notice of Katara's weakness. Taking her hand in his, a smile spread on his features. "you need some rest Katara, Let me take care of you...."
Listening to her speak, Zuko nodded. "get some sleep zuora" he smiled before walking out of the room and walk down the hall to enter his own room.
