Gilraen heard the sigh from Glorfindel when she asked about how his day had been and gave him a supporting hug. She had been a bit nervous for the evening herself, not really wanting this ball to happen at all. In her heart she had already chosen who she wanted to share her life with, and the suitors her mother had chosen could not compare to him.
"I am nervous for the party too," she confessed as she snuggled into his arms. "If it was up to me, we wouldn't have this party at all - because I have already made up my mind about who I want to be with. There is nothing they can say or do to make me change my mind."
She was glad that Glorfindel returned her feelings, and that he would help her fend off the other suitors. Yet she had tormented herself with a thought all day: What if something went wrong? What if Mother found out what she was planning - and forced her to face the suitors without Glorfindel's presence? Well, she would have to wing it of course - luckily Glorfindel had given her a few ideas about what men disliked. She loved the idea of disagreeing to all the men said.
Lord Elrond was glad that the young guard borrowed from Lord Haidar's men seemed to understand the importance of his task. He looked strong and alert, just the right man for the task of guarding his daughter's virtue. When the young man promised to make sure no harm came to Gilraen, the elf lord smiled. "Excellent, young man," he smiled. "If you manage to keep them away, I will talk to your Commander about a promotion for you. Keep an extra eye on young Lord Mapleleaf - he is more fond of young women than I appreciate. Unfortunately he is not willing to take responsibility for his actions afterwards, from what I hear."
Gilraen walked close to her parents into the dinning area, forcing a smile when one of the servants pulled out a chair for her close to her parents. She had overheard the conversation between Mother and Father, and saw the rage in Mother's eyes when she found out that Glorfindel was her personal guard for the night. She hoped Mother would be so busy with her duties as a hostess that she did not have time to make any changes.
Lord Elrond noticed the moment of rage in the eyes of his wife, and wondered what was wrong. He had not discovered the feelings between his daughter and the guard walking a few steps behind them. "Captain Saben has done an excellent job protecting our country during the war," he replied gallantly. "I trust his wisdom when it comes to choosing the right guard for the job."
