Katara giggled as Zuko whispered in her ear, a tell-tale blush creeping on her face by having him so close. "You really must stop complimenting me so much," she told him, running a hand along his cheek. "You'll give me such a big head I won't be able to fit through the door." All the same, she planted a kiss on his lips in gratitude.
Watching with amusement as Zuora took samplings from her plates, Katara began portioning out her own food. The combined smells were wonderful, each dish adding a different texture to the overall whole. She smiled as the child offered her a bit of pastry, nodding in delight as she chewed it.
Settling into their feast, Katara noticed that her throat felt strange. Taking a sip of water, she looked around the table. Everything was normal, the room filled with diners busy with their own meals. Zuko and Zuora were happily eating beside her, the child looking more delighted than ever before.
Pushing the pile of leechi nuts around her plate with her chopstick, Katara felt her vision starting to haze. Now the strange taste was in her mouth and she raise a hand over her lips to keep anything from coming out. Perhaps she was allergic to something in the pastry? Her stomach twisted and the waterbender closed her eyes. Removing the hand from her mouth, she touched her ribs, the pain pulsating like a burning flame.
"Excuse me a moment," she announced, the pain too much. Getting quickly up from the table, she hurried to the restroom and locked the door behind her. She wasn't in there a moment before the bile filled her mouth again and she threw up in the toilet.
After the retching had stopped, Katara sat on the ground shaking. She felt tired and her body was flushed with sweat. Again she touched her stomach, her skin burning under her fingers. What was going on?
