Katara sat quietly under the shade of the ancient tree, watching the turtleducks floating around the fountain pool. She smiled as the tiny ducklings hurried after their mother, not wanting to stray too far from her protective gaze. Breaking a piece of bread into tiny morsels, she tossed them incrementally into the pond, the only movement she made.
The day was cool and Katara had the royal gardens to herself. She had been visiting Zuko in the Fire Nation for nearly a week but today, the royals had a hugely important meeting to attend. This left the waterbender to provide her own entertainment. Shopping in the capital marketplace was only so exciting and Katara wanted to have some time alone to think.
Ever since arriving in the Fire Nation, Katara had felt strange. While not visibly sick, she had kept her interactions with dignitaries to a minimum. It was completely possible that it was the change of climate that had brought on this unease, but the waterbender was toying with another possible cause: one that both excited and terrified her.
Tearing her eyes off the ripples of the pond, Katara stared down at her lap and ran a hand over her stomach. There it was again, that same feeling of warmth from below her belly button. Her body was still lean as ever, only the mental link Katara had discovered made her see the change. Perhaps it was due to her abilities as a healer, but she could feel another soul radiating from her midsection, the thoughts of another being, the beat of another heart.
Closing her eyes with a sigh, Katara glanced to the walkway that lead from the meeting hall, terrified that she would spotted before she was ready. Was she ready to face him in any capacity? What would he say or do when she voiced her premonition, one that concerned them both?
